Synchronization License

Music Publshing Glossary

A sync license is a legal permission that allows users to synchronize a song with moving images on a screen, generally in television, film, or advertisements. When a song is used, both the recording owner and the composition owner must grant a sync license. This license is most often paid as a one-time upfront fee. Additionally, songs earn a performance royalty payable to songwriters and publishers when the program containing their song is broadcast or streamed.
