Retroactive Royalties

Music Publshing Glossary

Retroactive royalties refer to unallocated royalties that are yet to be paid to the rightful copyright owners. This usually happens when songs are not registered correctly or when the contact information for the songwriter is not available. Typically, these royalties remain with the collection society for a certain period of time, depending on the society’s policy, before they are transferred to the black box. For more information, please refer to unallocated royalties.
