Neighbouring Rights

Music Publshing Glossary

The public performance right is associated with a recording copyright. These rights, also known as “related rights”, are similar to the public performance rights associated with compositions. However, they are paid to recording owners (usually labels) and performing artists instead of songwriters and publishers. In the United States, these rights are recognized as a “digital performance” right and are only applicable to non-interactive digital transmissions, such as satellite and digital radio (e.g. Sirius XM and Pandora). It is important to note that these rights are not applicable to broadcast radio.
