Non-profit organizations, known as Collective Management Organizations (CMOs), are responsible for managing and licensing the use of copyrighted music. They keep track of the music usage and collect royalties earned from it, and then pay out the earned amount to the respective songwriters and/or publishers. CMOs generally have an open and non-discriminatory criteria to join, they are owned by their members, and require legal authorization to operate. Each CMO operates within a specific country or territory and may vary in the type of royalties they collect.
