Collection societies are organizations that protect, register, license, and collect royalties for the works of their members. The most commonly known types of collection societies are performing rights organizations (PROs), collective management organizations (CMOs), and mechanical rights organizations (MROs). When you become a member of a collection society, you give them the right and responsibility to track the usage of your works for their respective rights types, account for them, and pay you accordingly. Collection societies are a major source of income for artists and creators, but it’s important to note that not all sources of income are collection societies.
