Interactive/Non-Interactive Streaming

Music Publshing Glossary

Interactive or “on-demand” streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal, or Apple Music allow listeners to select the recordings they want to listen to, and generate both performance and mechanical royalties. In contrast, non-interactive streaming services, notably Pandora, which are sometimes loosely referred to as “streaming radio”, do not allow listeners to choose specific songs, and only pay performance royalties.
